INTRODUCTION ABOUT NORFLOX 400MG TABLET

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET contains Norfloxacin which belongs to the group of medicines called Fluoroquinolone antibiotics. It is used to manage urinary tract infections (infection in any part of the urinary system, the kidneys, bladder or urethra) and gonococcal infections (sexually transmitted infection that infects both male and female).  

Always take NORFLOX 400MG TABLET exactly as directed by your doctor. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have or had seizures, tendon problems, liver, kidney or heart problems. Drink plenty of liquids during management with NORFLOX 400MG TABLET (such as water or juice) to avoid potential side effects (such as crystalluria).

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking products containing calcium such as dairy products (milk or liquid milk products such as yoghurt), including iron, zinc or multivitamin supplements.

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women. NORFLOX 400MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged under 18 years). Also, it should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 60 years and above) due to increased risk of pain and swelling in the joints and inflammation or rupture of tendons.

The common side effects of taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET are headache, dizziness, light-headedness stomach pain and nausea. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect worsens or persist for a long period of time.

HOW NORFLOX 400MG TABLET WORKS

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET works by inhibiting the activity of the bacterial enzyme DNA-gyrase, which helps to manage the bacteria from multiplying and thus effectively manages the bacterial infection.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take NORFLOX 400MG TABLET exactly as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of the management for you based on the age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF NORFLOX 400MG TABLET

COMMON

  • headache
  • dizziness, light-headedness, drowsiness

UNCOMMON

  • crystalluria
  • tiredness
  • mood swings
  • difficulty sleeping, sleep disorders
  • anxiety, nervousness
  • irritability, euphoria, disorientation
  • hallucination, confusion
  • polyneuropathy (nervous system in your arms and legs does not work properly)
  • fits
  • myasthenia gravis (disease causing muscle weakness)
  • disturbed vision
  • increased lacrimation (tear production)
  • tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • palpitation (feeling your heartbeat)
  • heartburn, vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • skin reactions and photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight)
  • pain or inflammation in joints
  • muscle pain, inflamed tendons
  • vaginal candidiasis

RARE

  • pseudomembranous colitis (inflammation of the bowel causing fever, abdominal pain or diarrhoea
  • inflammation of the Achilles (pain and swelling in the backside of your heel when you walk or run)

Stop taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • symptoms of angio-oedema (such as swollen face, tongue or throat, difficulty in swallowing, hives and difficulty breathing)
  • severe skin reaction
  • symptom of an inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) or liver failure (such as yellow discoloration of the eye whites or skin)
  • pain or inflammation of a tendon (in your ankle, wrist, elbow, shoulder or knee)
  • symptoms of nerve damage (neuropathy) such as pain, burning, tingling, numbness and/or weakness especially in the feet and legs or hands and arms
  • pseudomembranous colitis (infection causing inflammation of the large intestine, severe and persistent diarrhoea)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Diarrhea

Drink lot of fluids such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Headache

Drink ample amount of water and avoid skipping meals. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve. 

Nausea And Vomiting

Stick to simple meals while taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.  

Skin Rash Or Itching

Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin further. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when going outdoor. Regularly use moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If the symptom still persists, consult your doctor.

Stomach Pain

Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller and frequent meals. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, consult your doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

Contraindicated

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women and those who are planning to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine inform your doctor immediately. You must use effective contraceptive methods while you are taking this medicine. Consult your doctor before taking it.  

BREASTFEEDING

Contraindicated

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking it.  

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Use with Caution

Do not drive or handle machines while taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET, since it may cause dizziness or light-headedness.  

ALCOHOL

Contraindicated

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during management with NORFLOX 400MG TABLET.

KIDNEY

Use with Caution

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease or problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

Use with Caution

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY

Contraindicated

Do not take NORFLOX 400MG TABLET if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Norfloxacin or other ingredients of this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

Use with Caution

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with an enlargement or bulge of a large blood vessel (aortic aneurysm or large vessel peripheral aneurysm), experienced a previous episode of aortic dissection (a tear in the aorta wall), very slow heart rhythm, weak heart (heart failure), history of heart attack, have a family history of prolonged QT interval, aortic aneurysm or aortic dissection or predisposing conditions (such as connective tissue disorders such as marfan syndrome, vascular disorders such as takayasu arteritis, high blood pressure or known atherosclerosis). Consult your doctor before taking it.

USE IN PEDIATRICS

Contraindicated

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged under 18 years). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

USE IN GERIATRICS

Use with Caution

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 60 years and above) due to increased risk of pain and swelling in the joints and inflammation or rupture of tendons. Consult your doctor before taking it.  

OTHERS

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • have a history of inflamed (tendonitis) or ruptured tendons related to management with fluoroquinolones

Before taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have a surgical history of organ transplant recently
  • epilepsy or convulsions (fits)
  • mental disorders such as hallucination or confusion
  • disorders of the central nervous system such as reduced blood flow to the brain or a stroke
  • glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme deficiency
  • myasthenia gravis

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

Before taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • tizanidine (used to manage muscle spasticity in multiple sclerosis)
  • nitrofurantoin (manages urinary tract infection)
  • probenecid (used to manage gout)
  • theophylline (used to manage asthma and lung disease)
  • cyclosporine (used to manage rejection of organs after transplant)
  • warfarin (used to manage or manage blood clots)
  • fenbufen (used to manage pain)
  • anti-arrhythmics such as quinidine, hydroquinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, ibutilide (used to manage or manage irregular heart beat)
  • tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (used to manage depression)
  • macrolides such as erythromycin, clarithromycin (used to manage bacterial infections)
  • antipsychotics such as risperidone, ziprasidone (used to manage mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder)
  • oral contraceptives such as ethinylestradiol and norethindrone (used to manage pregnancy)
  • multivitamins (used to manage vitamin deficiency)
  • antacids such as aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide (manages heartburn and indigestion)
  • sucralfate (manages ulcers)
  • caffeine (found in some pain-killing medicines)

B. Drug–Food interaction:

NORFLOX 400MG TABLET should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking products containing calcium such as dairy products (milk or liquid milk products such as yoghurt). Consult your doctor before taking NORFLOX 400MG TABLET.  

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of NORFLOX 400MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.
