About this item

INTRODUCTION ABOUT METOSARTAN 50MG TABLET

METOSARTAN 50MG TABLET is a medication used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure). By lowering blood pressure, it reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It contains a combination of two medicines, metoprolol and telmisartan which works together effectively to improve heart functions.

It is recommended to take METOSARTAN 50MG TABLET with food at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels. Continue taking it as prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel fine, since high blood pressure often presents no symptoms. Stopping the medication abruptly can worsen your condition. Along with the medicine, staying active, maintaining a healthy diet, and managing your weight can further help control blood pressure. Always follow your doctor’s guidance while on this therapy.

Common side effects include headache, weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, increased potassium levels, orthostatic hypotension (which may lead to fainting), breathlessness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fatigue. It is advised to avoid potassium-rich foods or supplements while taking this medicine. Since it can cause dizziness, avoid driving or get up slowly from a seated position. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar, kidney function, urea, and electrolyte levels may be required during treatment.

Before starting this medicine, inform your doctor if you have any kidney or liver issues. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before use. Also, let your doctor know about any other medications you are taking, particularly those for blood pressure or heart conditions.

HOW METOSARTAN 50MG TABLET WORKS

METOSARTAN 50MG TABLET helps in managing high blood pressure where metoprolol works by managing certain chemical messengers to bind their respective receptors in the heart and vessels, causing heart to beat slowly with less force and telmisartan blocks the effect of angiotensin II receptor (a chemical messenger that narrow down your blood vessels) that causes relaxation and widening of blood vessels resulting in lowering of blood pressure.

Drug - Drug interaction

1. Interactions with Antihypertensive Medications

Other RAAS Inhibitors (e.g., ACE inhibitors or ARBs): Co-administration can increase the risk of hyperkalemia, kidney dysfunction, or hypotension. Regular monitoring of potassium levels and renal function is recommended.

Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazide): Co-administration may lead to an excessive drop in blood pressure, especially after the first dose, due to synergistic antihypertensive effects.

2. Interactions with Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

Drugs like Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or Aspirin can reduce the antihypertensive effect of this tablet

Long-term use of NSAIDs with Telmisartan can impair renal function and increase the risk of renal failure, particularly in elderly patients or those with existing kidney disease.

3. Interactions with Antidiabetic Medications

Telmisartan may enhance the blood sugar-lowering effects of insulin or oral antidiabetic drugs, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia.

Metoprolol can mask symptoms of hypoglycemia, such as tachycardia, which may delay treatment in diabetic patients.

4. Interactions with Drugs Affecting Potassium Levels

Potassium-Sparing Diuretics (e.g., Spironolactone, Amiloride) or Potassium Supplements:
Telmisartan may increase potassium levels, leading to hyperkalemia, a condition characterized by muscle weakness, fatigue, and irregular heart rhythms.

5. Interactions with Calcium Channel Blockers

Amlodipine or other calcium channel blockers combined with Metoprolol may result in an additive effect, leading to severe bradycardia, hypotension, or dizziness.

6. Interactions with Antiarrhythmic Drugs

Amiodarone or Digoxin: Metoprolol’s beta-blocking properties may increase the risk of severe bradycardia or conduction disturbances. Digoxin levels should be monitored, as they may rise due to Telmisartan.

7. Interactions with CNS Depressants

Sedatives, antidepressants (e.g., SSRIs), or antipsychotics: Metoprolol may amplify the sedative effects of these drugs, causing excessive drowsiness, fatigue, or dizziness.

8. Interactions with Lipid-Lowering Medications

Statins (e.g., Atorvastatin, Rosuvastatin): Metoprolol metabolism may be affected, increasing the risk of muscle pain or rhabdomyolysis.
