INTRODUCTION ABOUT MESACOL OD TABLET
MESACOL OD TABLET contains Mesalamine which belongs to the group of medicines called Salicylates. MESACOL OD TABLET is used to manage mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel disease) in affected individuals.
MESACOL OD TABLET is also used to reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis which generally occurs as diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, and/or stomach pain in affected individuals.
MESACOL OD TABLET is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Mesalamine, salicylates (such as acetylsalisylic acid), and/or sulphasalazine. It is also not recommended for use in patients with serious kidney/liver disease.
Before taking [GBKEYWORD], inform your doctor if you have narrowing/blockage of stomach/gut, lung problems, and/or mild to moderate kidney/liver problems.
MESACOL OD TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is clearly necessary. MESACOL OD TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents aged below 18 years (due to lack of data on safety and efficacy of the medicine). It is advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) after consulting the doctor.
The most common side effects of taking MESACOL OD TABLET are indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, itching, and/or rash. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsens.
USES OF MESACOL OD TABLET
- Manage and manages mild to moderate ulcerative colitis
- Reduces symptoms of ulcerative colitis which generally occur as diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, and/or stomach pain in affected individuals
HOW MESACOL OD TABLET WORKS
MESACOL OD TABLET works by suppressing the production of prostaglandins (chemical messengers responsible for inflammation in the intestines) which results in reduced inflammation and ulceration thus providing relief from ulcerative colitis (and its associated symptoms) in affected individuals.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Tablet:
Take MESACOL OD TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
Orally Disintegrating Tablet:
Take MESACOL OD TABLET as advised by your physician. Place MESACOL OD TABLET inside your mouth and allow it to dissolve completely. Do not swallow or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF MESACOL OD TABLET
COMMON
- indigestion, abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence
- headache, tiredness, weakness, fever
- joint pain, back pain
- changes in blood pressure
- itching, rash
UNCOMMON
- bleeding and bruising
- feeling sleepy/tired/dizzy
- trembling/shaking, muscle pain
- hair loss, ear pain, throat pain
- racing heartbeat
- inflammation of pancreas associated with signs such as pain in upper abdomen, nausea, and/or back pain
- rectal polyp (a non-cancerous growth in the back passage) associated with symptoms such as constipation, and/or bleeding
- acne, red itchy welts
- swollen face
RARE
- kidney failure
- prone for infection (due to severe reduction in the number of white blood cells)
- photosensitivity (increased sensitivity of your skin to sun and ultraviolet light).
Stop taking MESACOL OD TABLET and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:
- serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis associated with symptoms such as reddish non-elevated, target-like/circular patches on the trunk associated with central blisters, skin peeling, ulcers of eyes, nose, mouth, throat, and/or genitals.
- signs of acute intolerance syndrome such as cramping, severe stomach pain, bloody & excessive stools (diarrhoea), fever, headache, and/or rash.
- unexplained bruising (without injury), rash, anaemia, fever, sore throat, and/or unusual bleeding
- signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of tongue, lips/eyes
- signs of increased pressure in brain such as headache, blurred/dimmed vision, double vision, brief/permanent vision loss, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and/or ringing in ears
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea and vomiting:
Take MESACOL OD TABLET with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods, sugary snacks and drinks. Avoid drinking too much liquid along with your meals, drink slowly in between meals. Inform your doctor if the condition worsens.
Diarrhea:
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.
Headache:
If MESACOL OD TABLET causes headache, then take rest and drink plenty of fluids. Try to avoid drinking alcohol. Ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller. Headaches should usually go away after the first week of using MESACOL OD TABLET. If it lasts more than a week or severe, inform your doctor.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and get enough sleep. Try to avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you feel dizzy. Limit consumption of alcohol, as it can aggravate dizziness. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.
Tiredness:
Make sure you take rest and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol. Try to take MESACOL OD TABLET at a time when you can sit down (or lie down) when the symptoms are at their worst. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel well.
Itchy Skin:
Try to pat or tap your skin instead of scratching it. Hold a damp towel to cool your skin. Wear loose clothing and avoid tight clothes, or clothes made from wool or synthetic fabrics. Avoid using perfumed soaps, deodorants or moisturizers and use a skin softener regularly.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
MESACOL OD TABLET should be used with caution during pregnancy and in women planning for pregnancy only if it is clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking MESACOL OD TABLET.
BREASTFEEDING
MESACOL OD TABLET should be used with caution in breastfeeding women only if it is clearly necessary as the medicine may pass through milk. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
MESACOL OD TABLET is unlikely to affect your ability to drive and/or operate machines. Consult your doctor before taking MESACOL OD TABLET.
KIDNEY
MESACOL OD TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney problems. It should be used with caution in patients who have/had mild to moderate kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking MESACOL OD TABLET.
LIVER
MESACOL OD TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients who have/had mild to moderate liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking MESACOL OD TABLET.
ALLERGY
Do not take MESACOL OD TABLET if you are allergic to Mesalamine, salicylates, sulfasalazine, and/or any other ingredients of this medicine.
LUNGS
MESACOL OD TABLET should be used with caution in patients with lung problems. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
HEART DISEASE
MESACOL OD TABLET should be used with caution in patients with heart problems such as inflammation of heart (due to infection). Consult your doctor before taking MESACOL OD TABLET.
OTHERS
Before taking MESACOL OD TABLET inform your doctor if you:
- have narrowing/blockage of stomach/gut
Use in Paediatrics:
MESACOL OD TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) due to lack of data on safety and efficacy of the medicine. Consult your doctor before administering the medicine to the child.
Use in Geriatrics:
MESACOL OD TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking MESACOL OD TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- sulphasalazine (medicine used to manage ulcerative colitis)
- non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (medicines used to reduce fever and provide relief from pain) Ex. aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac
- azathioprine (used after transplantations or to manage autoimmune diseases)
- mercaptopurine (medicines used to manage leukemia)
- medicines used to manage blood clotting (Ex. warfarin)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of MESACOL OD TABLET, visit the nearby hospital or consult and inform your doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdosage are tinnitus (ringing in ears), dizziness, headache, confusion, drowsiness, shortness of breath, excess loss of water (associated with sweating, diarrhoea, and vomiting), light-headedness (due to low blood sugar), rapid breathing, and/or fever.
