INTRODUCTION ABOUT DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET contains Piroxicam, which belongs to the group of medicines called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. It helps to reduce pain and swelling affecting the joints. It is also used to relieve the symptoms caused by osteoarthritis (a joint disease that occurs when the protective tissues at the end of the bones wear out and is characterised by joint pain in the hands, neck, and hip), rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune disease-causing painful swelling of joints and stiffness), and ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatism of the spine resulting in a hunched forward posture).

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with heart problems, and it should be used with caution in patients with asthma, liver, and kidney problems. DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women, especially during the last three months of pregnancy, and it should be used with caution during breastfeeding.

The safety and effectiveness of DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET in children and adolescents have not been established. DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in elderly patients of 80 years and above. The most common side effects of this medicine are nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, skin rash, headache, and drowsiness. Consult your physician if any of the symptoms worsen.

USES OF DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET

  • Reduces pain and swelling affecting the joints
  • Relieves the symptoms caused by osteoarthritis (joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatism of the spine) such as swelling, stiffness and joint pain

HOW DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET WORKS

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET exerts its anti-inflammatory actions by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-1 thereby, blocking the release of prostaglandins (a substance produced during injury and inflammation causing pain and swelling) and other chemical mediators that cause pain and swelling.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine as a whole with a sip of water. Do not crush or chew them. The correct dose and duration will be decided by your doctor depending on your age, and health condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET

COMMON

  • dizziness or drowsiness
  • nausea (feeling sick), vomiting
  • diarrhea, indigestion
  • abdomen pain or discomfort
  • changes in the red blood cells which may cause unusual bruising or bleeding
  • changes in white blood cell count which may lead to a high risk of infections
  • anorexia (eating disorder or inability to eat)
  • increase in blood sugar levels
  • headache
  • vertigo (feeling of spinning)
  • ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • constipation
  • wind
  • itching, skin rash
  • swelling of the feet, hands, or other parts of the body (oedema)
  • weight gain
 

UNCOMMON

  • blurred vision
  • fast heartbeat
  • sore mouth or lips
  • low blood sugar level

RARE

  • signs of kidney problems such as loss of appetite, decreased urinary output, fatigue
  • change in urine output or appearance

Stop taking DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • signs of an allergic reaction like asthma or worsening of asthma, irregular raised patches with severe itching (hives), swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue, blood vessel inflammation, serum sickness (rash, fever, joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes), purple spots on the skin, joint pain, abdominal pain and kidney dysfunction (Henoch-Schoenlein purpura), narrowing of the airways causing difficulty in breathing/wheezing, rash
  • signs of skin reactions such as severe rash involving reddening, a severe form of skin rash with flushing, fever, blisters, or ulcers (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), peeling and swelling of the skin as like in severe burns (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • stomach or intestinal bleeding, ulceration, or perforation, vomit blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds, blood in faeces (stools/motions), passing black tarry stools
  • signs of liver disease include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, fever), yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), inflammation of the liver (hepatitis)
  • signs of kidney problems such as loss of appetite, decreased urinary output, fatigue
  • signs of heart problems like water retention, high blood pressure, heart failure, increased risk of heart attack (“myocardial infarction”) or stroke
  • indigestion or heartburn, abdominal pain, or other abnormal stomach symptoms
  • signs of inflamed pancreas like severe pain in the upper abdomen or back
  • hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that weren’t there really)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Take this medicine with meals or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Try to avoid oil-rich or spicy foods, sugary snacks, and drinks. Try to drink liquids slowly along with your meals or in between meals. Consult your doctor if your symptom is not improving.

Dizziness:

Lie or sit down immediately when you feel dizzy. If you're feeling severe episodes of spinning (vertigo), lie in a dark and quiet place with your eyes closed. Try to avoid vehicle driving. Discuss it with your doctor if the symptom worsens.

Headache:

Apply a hot or cold water bag to your head. Try to take a rest in a quiet, dark room. Drink tea or coffee. Massage the scalp or head with mild pressure. Consult your doctor for advice.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. Try to have smaller and more frequent meals. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. Take your physician’s advice.

Skin rash:

Try to avoid hot showers because they may cause skin irritation. Avoid frequent contact with and rubbing over the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. If this symptom does not get better, speak to a doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women, especially during the last three months of pregnancy. Consult your doctor before taking it.

BREASTFEEDING

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET should be used with caution in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Consult with your physician.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machinery while taking DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET as it may make you feel dizzy, drowsy, have vision problems, and be tired. Consult your physician.

KIDNEY

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET if you are allergic to Piroxicam.

LUNGS

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients with asthma. Consult your doctor for advice.

HEART DISEASE

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe heart failure. It should be used with caution in patients with high blood pressure and other heart problems. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • have a stomach or intestinal ulcer, bleeding, or perforation
  • have stomach or intestines disorders such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, gastrointestinal cancers or diverticulitis (inflamed or infected pouches/pockets in the colon)

Before taking DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have stroke
  • have high cholesterol or hardening of the blood vessels (arteries)
  • have diabetes

Use in pediatrics:

The safety and effectiveness of DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET in children and adolescents have not been established. Consult your doctor for advice.

Use in geriatrics:

DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET is not recommended for use in elderly patients of 80years and above. Consult your doctor for advice.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

  • aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain relief
  • anticoagulants such as warfarin (a medicine used to manage blood clots)
  • corticosteroids like prednisolone (medicines used to manage a variety of conditions such as allergies and hormone imbalance)
  • low dose aspirin (75 mg) (a medicine used to manage heart attack or stroke)
  • medicines used to manage heart problems (Ex. cardiac glycosides, such as digoxin)
  • lithium or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (medicines for depression)
  • antihypertensives like telmisartan, and enalapril to manage high blood pressure
  • methotrexate (a medicine used in the management of cancer, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • ciclosporin, tacrolimus, (medicines to manage rejection of transplanted organs)
  • quinolone antibiotics (Ex. ciprofloxacin) which are used to manage various infections
  • mifepristone (a medicine used to terminate pregnancy)
  • diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide (used to manage high blood pressure or kidney problems)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of DOLONEX DT 20MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Signs and symptoms of overdose include lethargy, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, drowsiness, and epigastric pain.
