INTRODUCTION ABOUT DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE contains Diltiazem which belongs to the group of medicines called Calcium Channel Blockers. It is used to manage angina and hypertension. It also manages you from getting chest pain in future.

Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is a medical condition in which the force of the blood exerted against the walls of the artery remains very high and as a result it may lead to severe damage to the blood vessels supplying vital organs, such as heart, kidney or brain. If left unmanageed, it may cause serious complications such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke or even blindness.

Angina pectoris is a type of chest pain caused due to an inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle. Symptoms include severe chest pain, tightness or heaviness with dizziness, fatigue, sweating, shortness of breath and fast heart rate.

During management with DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE your doctor will constantly monitor your kidney functions, blood pressure and blood sugar levels to avoid the risk of unwanted side effects. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE as it may severely decrease your blood pressure.

Before taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney or heart problems apart from angina and hypertension. You must also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, asthma, stomach problems or any form of mental illness as a precaution.

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE is not suitable for use in pregnant women as it may cause serious harm to the growing baby. It is also not recommended for use in patients with heart failure, severe low blood pressure, problems in blood circulation or if you are a breastfeeding woman.

The most common side effects of taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE are nausea, indigestion, constipation, dizziness and swollen ankles. Contact your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.

HOW DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE WORKS

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE is a calcium channel blocker. It relaxes the blood vessels by blocking the entry of certain ions (calcium ions) within them that causes narrowing. This allows blood to flow more smoothly across the blood vessels. It also reduces the strain on the heart and helps the heart to pump blood more efficiently with less pressure.

 

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the medicine.

Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition. Do not stop taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE without consulting your doctor.

 

SIDE EFFECTS OF DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE

COMMON

  • headache, dizziness
  • swelling of the fingers, ankles, feet (edema)
  • constipation, indigestion, stomach pain, nausea
 

UNCOMMON

  • feeling dizzy while standing up or changing posture
 

RARE

  • dry mouth
  • lumpy, red, itchy skin

Stop taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects such as:

  • signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
  • difficulty in breathing or worsening of asthma
  • severe skin reactions (such as skin rash with itching and redness, blistering and peeling of skin, skin swelling and inflammation of mucous membrane, skin lesions with a pink/red ring and a pale center which may be itchy, scaly or filled with fluid)
  • fast, slow or uneven heart rate
  • signs of heart failure (such as shortness of breath with chest pain and swollen ankles)
  • unusual body movements, facial muscle spasms, rolling eyes, feeling shaky
  • signs of liver problems (fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea)
  • signs of high blood sugar levels (such as excessive thirst, passing more urine than normal and dryness of skin or mouth)
  • skin sensitivity towards sunlight
  • breast enlargement in men
 
 

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Take DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

Headache:

Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

Constipation:

Try to eat more fiber rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. If this does not help, consult your doctor for advice.

 

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in pregnant women and in women who think that they might be pregnant. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

BREASTFEEDING

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE may pass through breast milk. Therefore, it is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. However, consult your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness or tiredness after taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE as it may make you feel dizzier.

KIDNEY

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY

Do not take DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE if you are allergic to Diltiazem.

LUNGS

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with a previous history of asthma. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

HEART DISEASE

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients with serious heart problems (such as having a very slow or uneven heartbeat or heart failure). It should be used with caution in patients with a previous history of heart failure, shortness of breath, slow heartbeat or low blood pressure. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

OTHERS

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use if you:

  • have problems in blood circulation especially to the lungs

Before taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you:

  • have any surgery in the upcoming days
  • have depression
  • have any mental illness that causes mood changes
  • have any stomach problems
  • have diabetes
  • have porphyria (an inherited blood disorder)

Use in Pediatrics:

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). However, consult your doctor before taking it.

Use in Geriatrics:

DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years or above). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

 
 

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

Before taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

  • digoxin, amiodarone, ivabradine (medicines used to manage abnormal heart rhythm)
  • dantrolene (a medicine used to manage muscle spasms)
  • lomitapide (a medicine used to control blood cholesterol levels)
  • asunaprevir (a medicine used to manage Hepatitis C infection)
  • medicines used to manage high blood pressure (such as doxazosin, tamsulosin, atenolol, propranolol or acebutolol)
  • medicines used to manage angina (such as glyceryl trinitrate or isosorbide trinitrate)
  • medicines used to manage high blood cholesterol levels (Ex. simvastatin, fluvastatin and atorvastatin)
  • ciclosporin (a medicine used to suppress the body's immune function)
  • phenytoin, carbamazepine (medicines used to manage epilepsy)
  • medicines used to manage blood clots (Ex. aspirin, clopidogrel)
  • iodinated contrast media (used during X-rays)
  • theophylline (a medicine used to manage asthma) 
  • lithium (a medicine used to manage mental problems)
  • benzodiazepines (medicines used to manage anxiety) Ex. midazolam, triazolam
  • methylprednisolone (a steroid medicine used to manage allergies and inflammation)
  • cilostazol (a medicine used to manage leg cramps)
  • rifampicin (a medicine used to manage tuberculosis)
  • cimetidine, ranitidine (medicines used for stomach ulcers)

B. Drug-Food Interactions:

Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally took more DILZEM CD 120MG CAPSULE, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose might include severe hypotension (low blood pressure) leading to dizziness, fainting, slow heartbeat and changes in heart rhythm.
