INTRODUCTION ABOUT DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET contains Imipramine which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-depressants. It is used for the management of symptoms of depressive illness. It also provides relief of nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) in children. Nocturnal enuresis is the involuntary urination in children while sleeping at the age beyond which bedwetting is not expected.
During management with DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET, your doctor may regularly monitor the blood cell count and liver function test. As DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET causes teeth related problems, you are advised to have dental check-ups frequently.
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe liver disease and heart disease such as heart block or have recently had a heart attack, irregular heartbeats. DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET should be taken with caution in patients having severe kidney disease, history of epilepsy (fits) or brain damage. Consult your doctor for advice.
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use in children aged under 6 years and it should be used with caution in elderly patients.
Some serious effects of DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET includes suicidal thoughts or attempts, thoughts of killing or harming yourself and worsening of depression or anxiety. Contact your doctor or go to the hospital immediately if you feel such symptoms.
The most common side effects of taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET are nervousness, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, vision changes and constipation. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.
USES OF DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET
- Manage symptoms of depressive illness
- Provides relief of nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) in children
HOW DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET WORKS
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET effectively reduces the symptoms of depression where imipramine works by increasing the concentration of the neurotransmitter called norepinephrine and serotonin as this substance is found to be low in patients with depression. Through its anticholinergic effect (blocking acetylcholine), imipramine controls the involuntary muscle movements, thereby it provides relief from nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting in children.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET
COMMON
- fatigue (general weakness), restlessness, drowsiness, disorientation, delirium (mental disturbances causing confused thinking), confusion, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that wasn’t there), anxiety or agitation, sleep disturbances, swings from depression to hypomania or mania (extreme mood changes)
- tremor (involuntary shaking movements of hands and legs commonly)
- tingling or prickling sensation, numbness, headache, dizziness
- heart problems like sinus tachycardia and ECG changes in patients with normal heart status and postural hypotension (low blood pressure when standing up from sitting position), irregular heartbeat, conduction disorders, palpitations (fast or fluttering heartbeat)
- dry mouth, sweating, visual disturbances, blurred vision, hot flushes
- disturbances in urination, constipation
- nausea, vomiting, anorexia (eating disorder causing people to fear of weight gain)
- allergic reactions like urticaria, skin rash
- weight gain
- disturbances in libido (sexual drive) and potency
RARE
- psychotic symptoms activation
- fits or seizures
- signs of impaired liver function like yellowing of skin, and eyes, abdominal pain, loss of appetite
Stop taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- allergic reaction like pneumonitis (symptoms include fever, cough, chills, breathing difficulties, nausea, unusual weight loss) and skin rash, which may cause itchiness, sensitivity to the sun light or sun lamps, puffy or swollen face or tongue, which may become severe resulting in shortness of breath, shock and collapse
- suicidal thoughts or attempts, killing or harming yourself and worsening of depression or anxiety
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Vomiting:
Take this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods, sugary snacks and drinks. Avoid drinking too much liquid along with your meals, drink slowly in between meals. Consult your doctor if your symptom worsens.
Headache:
Drink ample amount of water. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Dizziness
Lie or sit down immediately when you feel dizzy. If you're feeling severe episode of spinning (vertigo), lie in a dark and quite place with eyes closed. Try to avoid vehicle driving. Discuss with your doctor if the symptom worsens.
Dry mouth:
Dry mouth can be managed by chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free hard candies to stimulate the flow of saliva. Sip water at regular intervals of time. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can be drying. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use during pregnancy. If it is taken during last three months of pregnancy DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET may cause breathing difficulties, colic, lethargy, irritability, blood pressure changes, tremors, spasm when the baby is born. Consult with your doctor before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET.
BREASTFEEDING
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding woman. Consult with your doctor before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machinery while taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET as it may cause drowsiness, blurred vision or impair alertness.
ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET.
KIDNEY
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients who are unable to urinate. It should be used with caution in patients having severe kidney disease. Consult with your doctor before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET.
LIVER
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe liver disease. Consult with your doctor before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET.
ALLERGY
Do not take DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET if you are allergic to Imipramine or other tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline or any other ingredients of this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having heart disease such as heart block or have recently had a heart attack, irregular heartbeats. Consult with your doctor before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET.
OTHERS
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- have mania (increased and exaggerated behaviour)
- have porphyria (red blood cell disorder causing skin blisters, abdominal pain and brain/ nervous system disorders)
- have increased eye pressure (glaucoma)
Before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- have psychiatric disorder (Ex. schizophrenia or manic depression)
- are withdrawing alcohol
- have glaucoma
- have an enlarged prostate gland
- have an overactive thyroid gland
- have a history of epilepsy (fits) or brain damage
- have low blood pressure or poor circulation
- have adrenal gland tumour (Ex. phaeochromocytoma or neuroblastoma)
- are suffering from panic attacks and long-term constipation
- are wearing contact lenses
- are being given electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
- are scheduled to have any surgery, including dental surgeries, which involves an anaesthetic
Use in pediatrics:
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children below 6 years of age. Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug - Drug interactions:
Before taking DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- medicines used to manage epilepsy (Ex. carbamazepine, phenytoin phenobarbital)
- benzodiazepines like nitrazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, oxazepam (used to manage insomnia and anxiety)
- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine, fluvoxamine (used for depression)
- disulfiram (used to manage alcohol addiction)
- nicotine replacement therapy (used to stop smoking)
- methylphenidate (medicine used to manage attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD))
- medicines used to manage blood clots (Ex. warfarin)
- antihistamines like chlorpheniramine (used to manage allergies)
- altretamine (medicine to manage some types of cancer)
- apraclonidine and brimonidine (used to manage glaucoma)
- baclofen (used as muscle relaxant)
- painkillers like nefopam, codeine, tramadol, dihydrocodeine (used to manage pain)
- medicines to manage some heart conditions (Ex. diltiazem, verapamil, labetalol, quinidine, propranolol)
- glyceryl trinitrate and isosorbide dinitrate (used to manage angina)
- medicines used to manage high blood pressure (Ex. guanethidine, bethanidine methyldopa, debrisoquine, reserpine, clonidine or diuretics like furosemide)
- thioridazine, chlorpromazine (used to manage some mental illnesses)
- cimetidine (a medicine used to manage stomach ulcers)
- entacapone or selegiline (used to manage Parkinson’s disease)
- oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) (used to manage pregnancy)
- appetite suppressants (Ex. diethylpropion, liraglutide)
- sympathomimetic medicines (which may be present in many cough and cold remedies or local anaesthetics) like adrenaline (epinephrine), isoprenaline, ephedrine, noradrenaline (norepinephrine), phenylpropanolamine and phenylephrine
- ritonavir (used to manage HIV)
- buprenorphine or opioids medicines (used to manage pain)
- thyroid medicine like carbimazole and propylthiouracil (used to manage hyperthyroidism)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of DEPSONIL 25MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of an overdose include irregular or fast heartbeat, drowsiness, agitation, low blood pressure, fits, coma, muscle spasm or rigidity, vomiting or fever.
