INTRODUCTION ABOUT CEFTUM 250MG TABLET
CEFTUM 250MG TABLET is an antibiotic medicine used in the management of various bacterial infections such as infections of the respiratory tract, throat infections, skin infections, ear infections, sinus infections, lung infections and urinary tract infections. It can also be used in the management of Lyme disease at its early stages.
It contains a medicine called Cefuroxime which is a powerful antibiotic agent that works by killing the susceptible organism that causes infection.
Take CEFTUM 250MG TABLET as directed by your physician. It can be taken after meals for better absorption. Usually, it is prescribed for 7-10 days to attain better control on infection. Therefore, do not stop taking this medicine or skip doses, as it may make this medicine less effective.
Before taking CEFTUM 250MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you have kidney problems. You must also inform your doctor if you are allergic to any antibiotics, previously experienced anaemia after taking antibiotics, scheduled for any blood tests, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The most common side effects of taking this medicine are headache, dizziness, diarrhoea and feeling sick. Consult your doctor immediately if any of the above symptoms worsen.

HOW CEFTUM 250MG TABLET WORKS
CEFTUM 250MG TABLET contains cefuroxime which is a second-generation cephalosporin that interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding to specific binding proteins located inside the bacterial cell wall. This leads to breaking down the cell wall of the bacteria and reducing its stability, thus causing cell damage, and eventually causing bacterial elimination.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
- Take CEFTUM 250MG TABLET as advised by your physician. It can be taken after meals for better absorption
- Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dosages
- Do not stop taking or skip doses of CEFTUM 250MG TABLET to achieve better control over infection
- Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of infection.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CEFTUM 250MG TABLET
Common Side Effects of CEFTUM 250MG TABLET:
- fungal infection
- headache, dizziness
- diarrhoea
- nausea, stomach pain
- increased type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
- increase in liver enzyme
- skin rashes
- increased number of blood platelets
- decreased number of white blood cells
- positive coombs test
Stop taking CEFTUM 250MG TABLET and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects
- fungal infection such as thrush
- severe diarrhoea with blood and mucus, stomach pain and fever
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
Consult your doctorThere are no adequate and well-controlled studies regarding the use of cefuroxime in pregnant women. Therefore, CEFTUM 250MG TABLET should be used in pregnant women only if required. Your doctor will decide whether you should take this medicine or not based on the risk and benefits of the medicine.
BREASTFEEDING
Monitoring requiredStudies have shown that Cefuroxime may pass through the breast milk. Therefore, CEFTUM 250MG TABLET should be used in breastfeeding women only under careful medical supervision. Consult your doctor for advice.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Use with CautionDo not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy after taking CEFTUM 250MG TABLET.
KIDNEY
Use with CautionCEFTUM 250MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with history of kidney problems and if needed dosage will be adjusted accordingly. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
ALLERGY
ContraindicatedDo not take CEFTUM 250MG TABLET if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Cefuroxime, cephalosporin, penicillin, monobactams, carbapenems or to any other ingredients of this medicine.
USE IN PEDIATRICS
Consult your doctorCEFTUM 250MG TABLET can be used in children only if prescribed by the physician. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition.
USE IN GERIATRICS
Use with CautionCEFTUM 250MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly especially patients with renal impairment. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.
OTHERS
CEFTUM 250MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- have cephalosporin-associated hemolytic anaemia
Before taking CEFTUM 250MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are:
- going to undergo blood sugar test or coombs test
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking CEFTUM 250MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- Other antibiotics (Ex: streptomycin, neomycin, gentamycin)
- Antacids (such as calcium carbonate)
- Anticoagulants (Ex. warfarin)
- Birth control pills (Ex. ethinyl estradiol)
- Anti-gout agents (Ex. probenecid)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took too much of this medicine, consult your doctor immediately. Symptoms are neurological disorders such as seizures (fits).
