INTRODUCTION ABOUT CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET contains Verapamil which belongs to the group of medicines called Calcium channel blockers. It is used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure), manage chest pain (angina). It is also used to manage certain types of abnormal heartbeats.
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you have heart failure or severe problems with the heart rhythms, recent history of heart attack, slow heart rate, low blood pressure. Consult your doctor before taking it.
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients who had a heart attack, cardiomyopathy (a disease of the heart muscle), kidney failure, liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary and CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking it.
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in children and elderly patients. The most common side effects of taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET are headache, dizziness, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, flushing, constipation, nausea, swelling of the limbs. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen.

- To manage hypertension

- To manage certain types of abnormal heartbeats
HOW CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET WORKS
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET works by blocking the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels. As a result, it relaxes blood vessels which leads to the lowering of high blood pressure. This increases the blood supply and oxygen to the heart while also relaxing the heart muscle. Thus, managing high blood pressure and angina (chest pain) effectively. CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET also interfere with the electrical signals in the heart muscle, useful in managing abnormal heartbeats.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition. Do not stop taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET until your doctor tells you to stop. Otherwise, your condition may get worse.
SIDE EFFECTS OF CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET
COMMON
- headache, dizziness
- slow heartbeat
- low blood pressure
- flushing
- constipation, nausea
- swelling of the limbs
UNCOMMON
- fast or irregular heart beat
- stomach pain
- tiredness or fatigue
RARE
- pins and needles, involuntary shaking
- sleeping for longer than usual
- ringing in the ears
- vomiting
- excessive sweating
Stop taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET and consult with your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- skin reactions with blistering or ulceration of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
- yellowing of the skin or eyes, a fever or tenderness around the stomach (jaundice)
- serious allergic reaction which causes severe skin rashes, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, tongue or throat causing wheezing and difficulty breathing, feeling faint or tightness in the chest
- swollen ankles or hot and painful hands and feet
- a rapid heartbeat or heart palpitations
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or ORS (Oral Rehydrating Solution) and apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if necessary. Contact your doctor if your headache did not improve.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not drink alcohol, as it can aggravate your dizziness. Contact your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.
Nausea and vomiting:
Take CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting did not improve.
Constipation:
Take fibre-rich foods in your diet such as fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grain cereals and drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly and stay active. Contact your doctor if constipation persists.
Stomach pain:
Try to have smaller meals but take frequently. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. Do not self-manage and contact your doctor if the stomach pain did not improve.

PREGNANCY
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor for before taking it.
BREASTFEEDING
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor for before taking it.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate machines if you feel drowsy after taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET.
ALCOHOL
Avoid alcohol consumption while taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET.
KIDNEY
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney failure. Consult your doctor before taking it.
LIVER
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.
ALLERGY
Do not take CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET if you are allergic to verapamil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
HEART DISEASE
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you have heart failure or severe problems with the heart rhythms (second- or third-degree atrioventricular block or sick sinus syndrome) unless you have a pacemaker, recent history of heart attack, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure. Consult your doctor before taking it.
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients who had a heart attack or have problems with the impulses of the heart (first-degree atrioventricular block), and cardiomyopathy (a disease of the heart muscle). Consult your doctor before taking it.
OTHERS
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET is not recommended for you, if you:
- have Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (rapid heart rate associated with dizziness or faintness)
Before taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:
- are having an operation
- have neuromuscular diseases or conditions which cause muscle weakness such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome or advanced Duchenne muscular dystrophy
- have an intolerance to lactose or sucrose
Use in paediatrics:
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in children. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Use in geriatrics:
CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients with heart or liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking it.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- alpha or beta-blockers (medicines used to manage high blood pressure and heart diseases) Ex. prazosin, doxazosin, metoprolol and propranolol
- aspirin (used for pain fever or to manage blood clots)
- quinidine, flecainide (used to manage irregular heartbeat)
- imipramine, buspirone (used to manage depression, anxiety and panic disorder)
- rifampicin (used to manage tuberculosis)
- erythromycin, clarithromycin and telithromycin (used to manage bacterial infections)
- ritonavir, nelfinavir (medicines used to manage HIV)
- doxorubicin (used in the management of cancer)
- phenobarbital, carbamazepine and phenytoin (used to manage epilepsy)
- digitoxin and digoxin, ivabradine (medicines used in the management of heart failure)
- colchicine, sulfinpyrazone (used to manage gout)
- cimetidine (used to manage stomach ulcers)
- immunosuppressants Ex. ciclosporin, everolimus, sirolimus and tacrolimus (medicines used to manage organ transplant rejection)
- statins (used to manage high levels of cholesterol) Ex. atorvastatin, lovastatin and simvastatin
- lithium (used to manage mania)
- midazolam (used as a sedative or anaesthetic)
- glibenclamide, glyburide, metformin (used to manage diabetes)
- neuromuscular blocking agents Ex. vecuronium (used in anaesthesia)
- almotriptan (used to manage migraine)
- dabigatran (used to manage blood clot)
- St. John’s Wort (used for mild anxiety)
- antihypertensives (medicines used to manage high blood pressure) Ex. chlorothiazide, ramipril
- theophylline (used to manage asthma)
- medicines to manage fungal infections, such as fluconazole or itraconazole
B. Drug - Food interaction:
Do not eat or drink products containing grapefruit juice while taking CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET, as grapefruit juice increases the effects of this medicine.
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose of CALAPTIN 40MG TABLET are low blood pressure and in rare cases heart failure.
