About this item
INTRODUCTION
ALDONIL OD contains Epalrestat which belongs to the group of medicines called Aldose reductase inhibitors. It is used in the management of diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a serious and common complication of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, which is a type of nerve damage that occurs due to long-term high blood sugar levels in diabetic patients that affects most often the legs and feet. It is generally characterized by symptoms such as numbness/reduced ability to feel pain or temperature changes, tingling/burning sensation, sharp pains/cramps, and muscle weakness.
Epalrestat works by inhibiting an enzyme (aldose reductase) which converts glucose into sorbitol. In diabetics, there is an excess sorbitol production that gets deposited in nerves and other tissues, causing diabetic neuropathy. By inhibiting the enzyme, epalrestat delays sorbitol accumulation in nerves and other tissues thus delaying the progression and occurrence of diabetic neuropathy in affected individuals. During management with ALDONIL OD, your doctor will closely monitor you if you have diabetic peripheral neuropathy with irreversible organic changes.
ALDONIL OD is not recommended for use in patients with allergic to Epalrestat. It should be used with caution in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy with irreversible organic changes. ALDONIL OD should be used with caution in pregnant women only if it is clearly advised by your doctor. It should be used with caution in breastfeeding women after consulting the doctor.
The safety and effectiveness of ALDONIL OD have not been established in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age), so consult your doctor before taking it. The most common side effects of taking ALDONIL OD are elevated liver enzymes (signs are dark urine, tiredness, itching, jaundice, and loss of appetite), and/or gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these symptoms worsen.
